- Classrooms across the IIMs are getting more academically diverse with the inclusion of students from backgrounds like humanities, commerce, science, and law, reports The Economic Times (ET).
The ratio, which once saw a higher participation from engineering students, is undergoing a transformation. Two non-engineering students account for every five students at the IIMs in Ahmedabad, Kozhikode, Indore, and Kashipur. And non-engineering students make up for 30% and 17% of the overall count at IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Bangalore, respectively, the report adds.
To attract students from diverse backgrounds, IIM-Calcutta introduced an academic diversity factor for bachelor’s degree. And in the last two batches, the diversity ratio improved from 8% to around 23-25%. The institute has extended this factor for post-graduate and professional qualifications for the 2023-25 batch.
Previously offering six points of academic discipline diversity factor (DFa) to non-engineering students, IIM-Kashipur has changed it to four points this year after improving the ratio to 47.25%. These points are offered to ensure fair representation in the MBA programme, the institute’s chairperson-admission Abhradeep Maiti shares.
While the women representation at most IIMs is 30%, IIM-Kozhikode and IIM-Indore have the best scores on both the academic and gender fronts, the report says.
These B-schools are also tweaking their curriculum to better prepare the leaders of tomorrow, shares another ET report.
IIM-Ahmedabad is focussed on including case studies about working in remote and hybrid work settings. This is being done to equip students with the demands of an evolving work environment and meet the recruitment criteria of companies during campus placements.
Classroom discussions on subjects like challenges related to email and virtual communication has been incorporated by IIM-Kozhikode, the report adds.

#iim #diversity - Major accounting firms are expanding into smaller cities in India, reports The Economic Times.
For instance, Deloitte, PwC, and IBM recently opened offices in Bhubaneshwar to serve global clients. Deloitte plans to hire 50,000 people over the next three years and plans to expand into new cities.
Reason? Declining accounting graduates in developed countries after the pandemic has helped India emerge as a powerhouse for global business services like taxation. Many firms also faced a shortage of certified accounting professionals, says Sunil Talati, President, Services Export Promotion Council.
Domestic accounting firms are also moving to smaller towns and raising wages, the report says.
According to an earlier report, Jaipur, Vadodara, Thane, Coimbatore, and Chandigarh have emerged as the top five talent hotspots among Tier 2 cities.
