Hi @doffery @hogworts and all friends here,

We sincerely thank all the businesses and developers who submitted applications for commercial licenses of the Yi model to 01.AI. Last night, we sent out emails to notify that your applications have been successfully approved. You can now use the Yi model for commercial purposes free of charge.

We would also like to take this opportunity to inform everyone in advance that the commercial licensing agreement for the Yi series models is about to be updated.
Under the new agreement, we will adopt a more open approach to granting commercial licenses – the principle being that once the application is completed, it implies that authorization has been granted. Thus, you can confidently embark on your journey in commercializing large-scale models right now!

Lastly, should you have any inquiries, requirements, or wish to collaborate, please do not hesitate to contact us at yi@01.ai.

Sincerely,
Richard Lin

I got an email send to your team, just after the release of your work, still didn't get any reply to my query 😕

Can you consider opensourcing the model instead of requiring applications if you're going to approve them immediately anyway? This will make it actually "open source"

Is this updated?

Hi @OneTek @bl791 @migtissera and friends here,

You are welcome to use Yi-34B for commercial purposes, following the guidelines we're about to share. While we're still finalizing the detailed terms of our commercial license with our legal team, I'm pleased to outline the key principles for you:

  1. Once you have fully completed the 'Yi Series Model Commercial Use Registration Form' and submitted it successfully to yi@01.ai, you will immediately obtain the license without the need to await a response from 01.AI; the commercial license agreement becomes effective right upon submission.

  2. This license has the potential for perpetual validity, provided that clients renew it every two years. To renew, clients simply need to notify 01.AI at least one month before the end of each two-year period, ensuring continuous validity of the license.

  3. Although we reserve the right to modify the license agreement, the version of the agreement you obtain based on the current major model version remains valid, including the aforementioned method of continuous renewal.

We will design and publish the commercial licensing terms based on these principles, and we will also send you a copy for reference once they are finalized and released by our lawyers.

The fields required to be filled in the "Yi Series Model Commercial Use Registration Form" are:

  • Name
  • Phone Number
  • Email
  • Official Website or Individual Linkedin
  • Full name of the organization
  • Please briefly describe the usage scenario (Please briefly describe the industry and usage. There is no need to reveal confidential information. Overly casual descriptions will affect the authorization review)

Or you can just fill the form at https://www.lingyiwanwu.com/yi-license. The content of the fields is all the same.

If you would like to understand why we have designed the commercial license agreement in this way, please refer to my other detailed explanation in "Design Philosophy of the Yi Series Model Commercial License Agreement."

Thank you very much for your reading.
We hope to continue walking hand in hand with you :)

Design Philosophy of the Yi Series Model Commercial License Agreement

The logic behind our commercial license is simply that we hope users who intend to use it commercially will let us know that they are using the Yi model, in what scenarios they are using it, and whether they plan to continue using it after the initial two-year period. This is why we designed the terms in this manner.

Specifically:

  1. Our initial intention is to open-source the Yi model with the hope that it can assist everyone in creating better AI products and services, whether for personal, academic, or commercial use.

  2. However, in accordance with the OSI's definition of open source, there is no requirement for users to notify us about how they are using it.

  3. We hope that commercial users of Yi will inform us about their usage scenarios and their intentions regarding continued use. This will enable us to engage more effectively with business users, collaborate in exploring ways to enhance the Yi model, and potentially establish an ecosystem that supports everyone's commercial success.

  4. Therefore, we plan to introduce the 'Yi Series Model Commercial Use Registration Form' to remind users to inform us about their commercial use of Yi.

Thank you all for your patience in reading this far. We aim to innovate in the way we open-source large models, creating a win-win licensing model. We also hope to share a successful future with you and appreciate your valuable feedback.

Understood. From a user perspective though, just letting you know that many users will not be using your model due to this "disclosure" restriction. If you really want to penetrate the open source market, the less restrictions the better.
Thanks for your work though!

@migtissera
Thank you for your opinion, I understand what you are saying. I hope you can also understand that our disclosure requirement is aimed only at a minority of commercial users, and not at the broader community, individuals, or academic users. After all, our intention is to encourage commercial users to proactively reach out to us through this approach - this is precisely the pain point for many open source projects, as the default open source licenses do not require this.

For commercial purposes, please review the Yi Series Models Commercial License Agreement and complete the form to obtain a commercial license at https://www.01.ai/yi-license.

BTW, the Yi Series Models Commercial License Agreement v1.0 has been introduced alongside the update of the Yi Series Models Community License Agreement v2.1 on November 23, 2023. I thought about this issue today and wanted to come here to provide some additional information.

Thanks for your usage and support 🤗
